City of Milwaukee Against Co-Sleeping

Postby Wanda » Tue Apr 21, 2009 12:04 pm

Three babies died while co-sleeping in the past two months in Milwaukee.
Now Milwaukee is trying to fight the practice of adults co-sleeping with their babies.
The city health department sent an automated phone message to 1300 daycares in the city urging them to pass safe-sleeping information along to parents.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett: "If you love your baby, put them in the crib.".

I co-slept with both my children and am very much pro co-sleeping
In normal circumstances, co-sleeping is completely safe and I believe it is the normal, natural way to be with your baby.
Accidents usually occur when alcohol or drugs are involved or other special circumstances.

I checked the three cases in Milwaukee. One of them involved a grandmother rolling onto a baby.
Another one involved an intoxicated mother who was co-sleeping with her baby on her couch.
The latest case doesn't give enough details. It just mentions that the mother co-slept with her baby and another child.

Another baby died and more info about the other cases.
In 4 of the 5 cases, alcohol was involved!
This is not a co-sleeping issue. This is an alcohol issue.

3 babies died in the last 17 days and they've started a big anti co-sleeping campaign here in Wisconsin.
It's a shame that they haven't given any details about the first 2 babies that died.
They did give details about the last one. Apparently the mother had been drinking alcohol.
You can read more about that at this link.
