Victor Schonfeld on flaws in animal advocacy

Postby rags » Mon Jan 18, 2010 12:03 pm

:govegan: But the Animals and Us series made vivid that the organised group efforts on behalf of animals have been largely fruitless to date, in terms of the end goals, and campaigns for small changes are quite possibly counterproductive. The organised activism is sorely in need of fresh perspectives. Thus I submit here for scrutiny five fatal flaws of animal activism:

1. Instead of promoting animal rights goals as a major plank within broader social change movements, animal organisations insist on going it alone. Yet the Green party's animal rights goals are as radical as any animal rights organisation's.

2. One of the world's largest animal rights organisations routinely employs naked young women, including porn stars, to chase mass media attention. Would a human rights organisation stoop so low?

3. Animal rights organisations have been handing out awards and lavishing praise on slaughterhouse designers and burger restaurant chains after "negotiations" for small changes that leave the systems of exploitation intact.

4. Instead of animal rights organisations promoting a clear "moral baseline" that individuals should become vegans to curb their own demands for animal exploitation, groups have given their stamp of approval to deeply compromised marketing concepts such as "happy meat", "freedom foods", "sustainable meat", and "conscientious omnivores".

5. Tactics of violence and personal intimidation have at long last fallen out of favour, but activists now pour energy and resources into organisations that lack any real strategy for bringing an end to animal exploitation, whether for food or science.

Rags, I am sure almost everybody on this forum wants total abolition of slaughter of farm animals for human consumption as quickly as possible but harsh reality is over 80% of people are still eating animal products without feeling any guilt for their contribution to most horrible heart breaking farm animal cruelty.
Sadly, too many people on this planet are not civilized enough and lack sensitivity.
When I post my messages on Garden Web forum to encourage people to use humane traps to catch mice, rats and other small animals, people made all kinds of excuses to use sickening glue traps and other barbaric traps to kill animals.
Sometimes I feel like trying to inform humane way of dealing with animals to primitive uncivilized people is just like trying to communicate with child molesters who have no intention to stop their immoral activities.
I hate to be negative but this is my honest feeling. Many people are just too selfish, immoral, and lack sensitivity to understand Animal Rights.
Too many people are only seeking their own pleasure no matter how much they contrubute to animal cruelty.
This is my main reason for distrust people and love creatures.
To be honest, I feel like throwing up knowing human selfishness and dishonesty.
Speaking about puppy mills, we all want to ban this mass breeding cruel business but I was little disappointed when I found out somebody in anti puppymill group was encouraging milk consumption by asking people to drink milk to support their group. Maybe this person has no idea about horror in dairy industries or she thinks only cats and dogs deserve humane treatment.
Needless to say, when I joined anti puppymill group of people, I had mixed feeling because I was thankful for many people who are working so hard to abolish puppymills and I still respect them deeply but why some of them only care about cats and dogs and not farm animals?

Please do not misunderstand me because no matter how much discouragement we get, there is no reason for us to stop showing humane way of dealing with all SENTIENT creatures.
I don't want to post my pro Animal Rights message on pet forums and Christian forums because most people on these forums are anti Animal Rights people and only care about cats and dogs.
I was harshly criticized on my Animal Rights messages on these forums.
Oh, I know it is very important for me to focus on bright side and think about courageous people who are risking their own lives to protect/save innocent defenseless creatures.
I must save my sanity!

rags, how can you change cold blooded barbarians and make them behave like compassionate Angels?
If you can change these people, you already converted billions of meat, dairy, egg eaters to vegans.
I am not calling people cold blooded barbarians if they are blind about horror in meat, dairy, egg industries and slaughterhouses but people who are well aware of horrifying brutalities toward billions of farm animals but still keep consuming animal products are questionable people to me.
To these people, their taste buds are more important than stopping farm animals cruelty and they don't care as long as they can satisfy their taste buds.
It takes miracle to convert these people because when we try to take away their shameful pleasure, they start insulting us to get even.
I think they know deep inside what they are doing is not right but they are hooked on animal products and they don't have strong will power to kick off their eating habit.
Believe me or not, some people who are involved in wildlife rehabilitation said, "Everybody eats eggs and dairy, some people are really crazy."
What I am asking you is do you have magic power to change meat, dairy, egg lovers to vegans??
I wish I can put rope around neck of meat, dairy, egg eaters and drag them to slaughterhouse for them to witness terrified tremblind animals.
Meat, dairy, egg eaters need to see petrified eyes of these animals in slaughterhouses!

I know many people made their decision to elinimate animal products in their life style after they watched films.
There are two kinds of people on this planet.
Selfish cold blooded barbarians who don't care about anything but themselves and others who have decency to care.

Speaking about animal cruelty in Christian communities, Amish puppymills are notorious and widely publicized in our country.
